HELP FOR WIDOWS IN UKRAINE
Our “Help for Widows” project is a quarterly grocery distribution program that provides vital spiritual, emotional, and material support to families of widows and widowers with young or disabled dependents in Ukraine and Moldova.
Our local contacts —churches and charitable organizations —gather widows at their facilities, where they prepare meals, hold uplifting services featuring encouraging messages, prayer and singing, and allow families to share their needs and testimonies. Children also enjoy fun crafts during these gatherings.
After the meal, families receive bags or boxes of groceries to take home ($30 worth of groceries). In special circumstances, ministers deliver groceries directly to the homes of widows.
The project operates regionally, with each area sponsoring a designated number of widows, and sponsors receive regular updates on the progress and impact of their support.
Aid is provided for 460 widows across 19 regions in Ukraine and 120 widows in Moldova.
(Due to lack of funding, some regions were temporarily put on hold in 2024.)
Additionally, we undertake one-time projects to address urgent needs, such as purchasing washing machines, refrigerators, and winter firewood or coal for families in need.
During the Christmas holidays, gifts are distributed to children from these families. (That is approximately 2,300 gifts in Ukraine and 600 gifts in Moldova).

ONE TIME PROJECTS FOR URGENT NEEDS
At our “Help for Widows in Ukraine” gatherings, we were made aware of many pressing needs and issues that families of widows and some full orphans are experiencing. We learned that some families living in villages do not have washing machines. Others urgently needed working refrigerators. Aside from quarterly meetings and grocery packets, we started to implement one-time side projects, which require extra funding. Our regional project leaders in Ukraine identify the families most in need.
In 2017, we purchased 50 washing machines. In 2018, 66 refrigerators and freezers were gifted to families. Next, widows asked for help keeping their homes warm throughout winter, particularly those that still use wood or coal for heating. Starting from 2019, we have been purchasing winter firewood for widows.
We have also sponsored several events specifically for women who became widows due to the war.

"The war in Ukraine has profoundly affected everyone. Many are struggling with fear, uncertainty about the future, and difficulties at work. For widows, navigating this situation is twice as challenging. Projects such as this one are not just important, they are essential within our churches."

WINTER FIREWOOD FOR FAMILIES OF WIDOWS
The need for firewood became more pronounced and urgent when the war started, due to the constant destruction of energy facilities. We purchase firewood for families of widows, missionary stations, people living by the front line (where heaviest fighting is happening), and some military stations.
During the 2022-2023 winter season, 114 box trucks of firewood were purchased and delivered in Ukraine for the families of widows, people affected by the war, to mission stations and for the military. Also, 12 trucks of firewood were purchased for widows in Moldova. The cost of one car of firewood is $300.
